High Court Threatens Jail for PDP’s Anyanwu and INEC Chair Over Defiance of Expulsion Ruling

The FCT High Court in Abuja has issued a Form 48 notice warning Samuel Anyanwu and INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan of contempt. They must obey the January 12 judgment that dismissed Anyanwu’s challenge to his PDP expulsion or face imprisonment. The notice, dated April 20, 2026, applies to suit CV/1050/2025. It names Anyanwu as respondent and lists key PDP figures as judgment creditors. The order highlights a deepening rift in the PDP. One faction backs Tanimu Turaki, supported by Governors Makinde and Mohammed, while the other follows Abdulrahman Mohammed with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s backing. Multiple legal battles are ongoing. Turaki’s camp has formally demanded that INEC withdraw recognition of Anyanwu’s party roles. It warns that failure to comply may prompt contempt proceedings against the commission.

Does anyone think this contempt notice will finally push PDP and INEC to implement the original expulsion ruling?

True, this contempt notice might force them to act, at least it raises the stakes for PDP and INEC.

I understand the optimism, but I doubt one contempt notice will force action on such entrenched political matters.

The timing of this Form 48 warning feels politically loaded, especially since it arrives four months after the January ruling was issued.

Imprisonment threat over a membership spat hardly addresses larger issues of voter trust or electoral integrity.

INEC and PDP should enter mediation or timely comply with the judgment to avoid dragging this into prolonged court battles.
