Three Court Rulings Shake Nyesom Wike’s Political Stronghold
In June 2026, three separate Court of Appeal judgments overturned key elements of Nyesom Wike’s political network in Rivers State. The May 29 ruling nullified all APC congresses in Rivers State from December 2024 to May 2026. It dismissed Tony Okocha’s leadership and voided every primary in that period. This casts serious doubt on Kingsley Chinda’s governorship bid and his role as House Minority Leader. On June 3, another appeal panel set aside the Federal High Court decision that had recognised Wike’s PDP caretaker committee. The judges found the Ibadan court granted reliefs beyond what parties had requested, stripping Wike’s faction of legal standing. Despite the upheaval, Wike has told supporters to await INEC’s final list of candidates. Critics argue his reliance on procedural tactics left his empire vulnerable to legal challenges.
