ARRA Condemns Xenophobic Violence in South Africa, Faults AU and Government Inaction
The Asylum and Refugee Rights Advocacy Foundation has strongly condemned the ongoing xenophobic attacks targeting African nationals in South Africa. It describes these acts of violence and intimidation as a serious violation of human rights and pan-African solidarity. The group warns that persistent scapegoating of foreign nationals undermines regional cooperation. It argues that South Africans also have economic and residential interests across the continent, and any normalization of xenophobia risks triggering reciprocal hostility. ARRA criticizes the African Union’s silence and calls on it to take visible, coordinated action. It also faults the South African government for failing to arrest and prosecute perpetrators, stressing that protecting all persons within its borders is a legal obligation. The foundation urges the Nigerian government to intensify diplomatic engagement, strengthen protective mechanisms for citizens abroad, and prepare contingency plans—including evacuation where necessary.
