Why Socrates Warned Against Democracy: Lessons for Nigerian Elections
We’ve heard that democracy is the best form of government since 1999. Yet our elections often feel like contests for who can hand out the biggest bags of rice or spin the best slogans. Socrates, the father of philosophy, was famously critical of democratic rule. He compared honest leaders to bitter medicine and flattering politicians to candy sellers who pander to the crowd. In his view, voting requires skill and knowledge, not just popularity. Are our elections doomed to favour “candy sellers” unless voters learn to think critically?
