Understanding Arousal Non-Concordance Without Shame

Physical sexual arousal does not always mean desire, enjoyment, consent, or an intention to act. Likewise, a person may feel genuine desire without an obvious physical response. Understanding this can reduce shame around involuntary bodily reactions. This is especially important for survivors of sexual abuse. Physical arousal during abuse is an automatic physiological response and never means consent or willingness. From a faith-based perspective, the response you choose matters more than an involuntary sensation. You can redirect your thoughts, leave an inappropriate situation, and act in line with your values. I acknowledge that sex is sacred and designed by God for divine purposes. By His grace, I will honour its sanctity. Amen.
