How SARS Will Slash Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup Bonuses by Nearly Half
Bafana Bafana returned home after the World Cup with each player set to earn about R1.6 million from FIFA prize money. But South African Revenue Service will claim a large share. Players must first pay 30% US tax on their World Cup earnings. SARS then takes another 15% under a double-tax treaty. Captain Ronwen Williams could lose almost half his bonus, paying R480 000 to the US and R240 000 to SARS, leaving him with around R880 000. On top of that, the squad received a promised R5 million bonus from the Sports Ministry for reaching the knockout stage. That payout will be split among 23 players and is also subject to SARS deductions.
