Brahim Díaz Matches Emenike’s World Cup Assist Record as Morocco Ties Nigeria’s Win Milestone

Brahim Díaz Matches Emenike’s World Cup Assist Record as Morocco Ties Nigeria’s Win Milestone

Morocco extended their unbeaten run at the 2026 World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Scotland in Boston. Real Madrid winger Brahim Díaz set up the only goal to match Emmanuel Emenike’s record of assists in two separate World Cup games for an African nation. He became only the fourth African player to do so, joining Emenike, Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan and Tunisia’s Wahbi Khazri. Remarkably, Díaz is the first to reach this feat in his first two tournament appearances. Just 70 seconds into the match, Díaz’s precise pass found Ismael Saibari for the fastest goal of the tournament so far. Morocco now sits on four Group C points and has six all-time World Cup wins, drawing level with Nigeria and Ghana.

It's impressive, but can one assist stat really reflect a player's overall impact on a tournament?

I'm not convinced a single assist sheds new light on Morocco's squad beyond highlighting Díaz's moment.

Teams aiming for consistency should focus on building collective creativity rather than relying on individual playmakers alone.
