FG to Scrap ‘Irrelevant’ University Courses as Unions Push Back
The Federal Government has announced plans to phase out university programs deemed “irrelevant” to Nigeria’s economic future. Education Minister Tunji Alausa warned at a forum in Abuja that social science disciplines could be cut to better align graduates with market demands. Alausa advised students against taking NELFUND loans for courses without clear job prospects. He also announced that by 2027 the Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Business Incubation Certification will be mandatory, and that AI and digital skills will be embedded at all levels of education. University unions and parent groups have voiced strong opposition. CONUA’s president called for curriculum evolution rather than elimination. NASU questioned how “relevance” is defined, noting many humanities graduates succeed. NAPTAN urged caution to protect parents’ investments.
