JAMB Steps In After Hijab Dispute at Ibadan UTME Centre

JAMB Steps In After Hijab Dispute at Ibadan UTME Centre

Tension broke out at the Esther Oshikoya CBT Centre in Ibadan during Thursday’s UTME session when female candidates wearing hijabs were reportedly stopped from entering the exam hall or asked to remove their headscarves. Observers called the move a violation of religious freedom and pointed out that JAMB rules permit candidates to wear hijabs. Soon after, officials from JAMB’s Oyo State office arrived to take charge of the situation. Calm was gradually restored as measures were put in place to let affected students sit their exams with their head coverings on. JAMB has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

You're right, restoring trust will take transparent policies and open dialogue with affected candidates.

Is it fair to pin trust issues on JAMB for one centre's hiccup? Might be isolated, not systemic failure.

It seems strange that such a respected CBT centre would mishandle religious attire rules during a national exam.

Some of these reports might exaggerate what happened, since invigilators often face confusing instructions on attire checks.

JAMB should issue clear written directives on religious attire and train exam staff to handle security checks respectfully and consistently.
