Kalika: Super Eagles’ Win Over Iran Is Heart-Warming but No World Cup Consolation

Simon Kalika, who assisted Samson Siasia at the 2005 U-20 World Cup and 2008 Beijing Olympics, described Nigeria’s 2-1 friendly victory over Iran as “heart-warming.” He warned, however, that it cannot make up for missing the 2026 World Cup. Moses Simon opened the scoring in the seventh minute at Antalya Stadium, with Akor Adams doubling the lead shortly after half-time. Iran pulled one back through Mehdi Taremi, but the Super Eagles held on for their second senior win over Iran in three meetings. Kalika stressed that these friendlies are largely ceremonial. He reaffirmed his belief that Nigeria remains Africa’s best team and among the world’s top ten. Missing a second straight World Cup, he said, is a setback for the players, Nigeria and the continent.

True true, that victory shows our young squad's grit. Fans should hype up the teamwork and fresh talent shining bright.

Kalika calls the friendly victory heart-warming, yet it feels more like an encouragement than a true measure of progress for the Eagles.

A friendly win won't change the fact we aren't in the World Cup; celebrating this result as hope seems premature to me.

Are you suggesting that paying the players directly leads to better Super Eagles performance? Can you clarify that link?
