Xi Jinping Meets KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun to Discuss China-Taiwan Unity

Xi Jinping Meets KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun to Discuss China-Taiwan Unity

Chinese leader Xi Jinping met KMT chairwoman Cheng Li-wun in Beijing on April 10. He expressed confidence that the growing ties across the Taiwan Strait will ultimately lead to unity. Xi called closer relations and eventual unification “an inevitable part of history.” He said Beijing is ready to deepen dialogue with Taiwanese groups that oppose independence. Cheng, the first KMT leader to visit China in a decade, echoed the need to lower tensions and avoid conflict. Her visit has drawn criticism in Taiwan for a perceived pro-Beijing stance. President Lai Ching-te warned that China’s military activities around the strait threaten regional stability. Meanwhile, lawmakers in Taipei debate a proposed NT$1.25 trillion defence budget. Cheng maintained that war between the two sides is not inevitable.

I'm not convinced unification will be smooth or universally welcomed, especially given Taiwan's diverse political views.
