Kano Man Jailed and Fined for Storing Human Waste Outside His Home

A Magistrate Court in Kano sentenced Mohammed Saidu to 14 days behind bars and fined him N100,000 after finding him guilty of stacking bags of human faeces outside his residence. Neighbours had repeatedly complained to environmental authorities about the foul odour and health risks. Dozens of waste bags were discovered when officials investigated the area. Saidu, who earns a living emptying septic tanks, reportedly stored the waste for sale as fertiliser. Magistrate Halima Wali visited the property before handing down the sentence and ordered immediate removal of all bags. Residents welcomed the decision, saying life in the neighbourhood has improved since the court’s intervention. Local leaders plan to mediate between Saidu and his neighbours once he completes his sentence.
