Studying Law in Nigeria With a Science Background: What You Must Know
Many science-track students wonder if they can switch to Law. In Nigeria, universities focus on your O’Level credits and JAMB subjects—not your former class. To study Law, you need at least five credit passes in O’Level, including English Language, Literature in English, Government or History, and two other approved subjects. Without Literature in English, most institutions will reject your application. If you missed it, you must retake WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB or consider related courses like Political Science. Your JAMB subject combination must include English Language, Literature in English, and one Social Science subject. Registering only science subjects will disqualify you. However, a science background can be an advantage: it develops analytical thinking and structured reasoning valuable in legal studies. Plan early by confirming your O’Level subjects, choosing the correct JAMB combination, and targeting universities with flexible admission policies. With the right preparation, your science background won’t hold you back from pursuing Law.
