Six Years On, AKK Pipeline Still Grounded as Deadlines Slip

Six years after its 2020 launch, the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) pipeline remains unready. NNPCL reports 98% of the 614km gas line is laid from Ajaokuta to Kano, but key above-ground facilities and terminals are unfinished. The commissioning date has moved from June 2022 to a tentative September 2026. Delays owe to insecurity, funding shortfalls, technical challenges and difficult terrain. Private investors have started building terminals at Ajaokuta to off-take gas while ancillary infrastructure is completed. Industry experts warn continued slippage could damage Nigeria’s credibility and stall plans for Trans-Saharan exports. Costing about $2.8 billion, the AKK pipeline is crucial for expanding domestic gas supply, adding up to 3,600 MW to the grid and boosting petrochemicals and fertiliser industries. Meeting the revised timeline now hinges on finishing off-take stations, securing investors and testing the system before first gas flows.
