Why Nigeria’s Spectacular Sights Don’t Attract Tourists – and Why Many Nigerians Are Leaving
Nigeria has stunning coastlines, forests, mountains, wildlife and a rich culture. Yet in 2024 it hosted just 1.4 million international visitors, far behind smaller or less naturally endowed countries. This gap is not about marketing alone. Systemic failures drive tourists away. Routine checkpoints, widespread kidnapping, and weak legal protection for women and children make visitors feel like targets rather than guests. Price gouging and selective enforcement of permits turn simple transactions into endurance tests. At the same time, the same extraction that repels tourists traps Nigerians. High passport and visa fees, pervasive bribery, rising living costs and hidden family demands drain incomes. With weak rule of law and unreliable services, many citizens see leaving as the only route to safety and fair treatment.
