How Produce Boards Can Empower Nigerian Farmers
Produce boards can strengthen partnerships between farmers and government by ensuring fair pricing and representation. Countries like Canada still enforce produce boards, highlighting their value for agrarian regions such as Hausa land. A board with farmer representatives and a guaranteed minimum percentage of sales revenue can secure better deals and incentivize government support. This model helped Nigeria lead in cocoa and palm oil under the West African Produce Marketing Board era but faltered after boards dissolved. Re-establishing produce boards could boost exports in beef, dairy, maize, and cash crops, tapping untapped VAT and personal income tax. With agriculture contributing far more to GDP than oil, this policy could transform Nigeria’s economy.
