“I Watched From Home”: Maduka Okoye on Super Eagles’ AFCON Heartbreak

“I Watched From Home”: Maduka Okoye on Super Eagles’ AFCON Heartbreak — 1 of 7
1 / 7

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has opened up about Nigeria’s painful exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the disappointment of missing the 2026 World Cup. Okoye withdrew himself from the AFCON squad and watched the semi-final loss to Morocco alongside millions of Nigerians. “We deserved to win the Cup, but next year is another chance,” he told SportyTV. He admitted the team is still seeking answers after falling short of World Cup qualification. “We have quality players and great characters. Hopefully, we get it done next time,” he said. With 18 caps since 2019, Okoye remains a key figure as the Super Eagles regroup and prepare for future challenges.

What might have motivated Maduka Okoye to step away and watch that AFCON semi-final, knowing he'd also miss the 2026 World Cup?

Watching at home after withdrawing himself highlights his disappointment, but it also raises questions about the team's collective morale during that AFCON run.

I understand he stepped aside, but choosing to watch the heartbreak on screen feels like a bold statement more than retreat.

Maybe Okoye's absence opened space for others to shine, so next time team management should plan goalkeeper rotations during major tournaments.
