Pope Francis Urges Compassion for Migrants in Canary Islands

Pope Francis Urges Compassion for Migrants in Canary Islands

On the final day of his visit to Spain, Pope Francis met migrants at a reception centre in Tenerife and declared that “all of us are migrants,” calling for greater support for those risking their lives at sea. He criticised human traffickers and highlighted overcrowding at centres like Las Raíces, once a military barracks. At the port of Arguineguín, he laid a wreath in memory of the 1,200 people who died or went missing on this route last year. The pope condemned growing indifference in Europe and insisted that dignity has no passport. He will conclude his trip with an open-air mass in Santa Cruz de Tenerife before returning to Rome and later visiting Lampedusa.
