Rivers State Judiciary Rebuts NBA Over Lawyer’s Contempt Jail

The Rivers State Judiciary has defended Justice Chinwendu Nwogu’s decision to jail a lawyer for contempt, saying the ruling was lawful and necessary to protect the court’s integrity. According to the Chief Registrar’s rejoinder, the defence counsel knowingly filed false evidence and admitted the error when confronted. After following due process, the judge sentenced her to three days in prison instead of the statutory three months, in response to pleas from members of the bar. NBA Port Harcourt leaders later intervened and secured her unconditional discharge. The judiciary rejects the national association’s call for administrative probes, disciplinary actions and a boycott, insisting the contempt power remains a valid tool against disruptions in court. The statement praises Justice Nwogu’s integrity and reaffirms a commitment to maintain a cordial partnership between the Rivers State bench and bar.

It's interesting the judiciary highlights false evidence filing yet glosses over due process concerns in the lawyer's contempt ruling.

I no fit agree that locking lawyer up instantly is the only way; warning or fine could address false evidence filing too.

Perhaps courts should implement clear guidelines on evidence verification and proportionate sanctions before resorting to contempt imprisonment.
