Russian Influencer Slams Putin: ‘We Shouldn’t Be Afraid’

Prominent Russian blogger Viktorija Bonja posted a rare public critique of President Vladimir Putin. In an 18-minute video, she told him that citizens and officials live in fear. Bonja said people, artists, governors and bloggers are afraid of the Kremlin leader. She argued that fear should not govern the country’s future. She praised Putin as a strong politician but said he lacked accurate regional reports. She pointed to issues such as flooding relief in Dagestan, last year’s oil spill near Anapa and recent internet shutdowns. Bonja has nearly 13 million followers on Instagram.

Wondering about this "rare public critique", what might motivate a high-profile influencer like Bonja to openly challenge Putin now?

Is there any reporting on recent events that could have spurred Bonja's decision to criticize Putin now?

I'm not convinced he waited for a dramatic moment, maybe he's reacting to internal pressure rather than a sudden epiphany.

It's striking that someone as connected as Bonja waited until now to speak out, given how strictly dissent is usually suppressed.

I see Bonja urging courage, but downplaying genuine security threats might risk underestimating Putin's control over dissent.

Activists should document and safely share accounts of intimidation before openly criticizing leadership to strengthen collective resolve.
