Bayelsa Governor Diri Unites Ijaw Youth Council Factions Ahead of 2026 Convention

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has brought together rival factions of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide to strengthen unity ahead of the council’s 2026 elective convention. At a stakeholders’ meeting in Yenagoa, IYC leaders and community representatives discussed peace, unity and the future of the Ijaw nation. Governor Diri urged members to prioritise collective interests over personal ambition and avoid actions that could divide the organisation. The governor encouraged dialogue, reconciliation and mutual respect, stressing that a united Ijaw people would be better positioned to pursue common goals and increase their influence nationwide. A key outcome was the reconciliation between Jonathan Lokpobiri and Theophilus Alaye, who agreed to work together for the progress of the IYC. Governor Diri commended both leaders for choosing peace over conflict and called on all stakeholders to continue promoting unity, peaceful engagement and development across the Niger Delta.

Governor Diri's meeting seems more like a political strategy than genuine unity effort, considering the stakes ahead of the convention.
