FG Removes UTME Barrier for Colleges of Education Admissions
The Federal Government has removed the UTME requirement for Colleges of Education admissions. From May 2026, candidates only need four credit passes in their O-Level results and the standard JAMB registration and screening. The move aims to boost enrollment and ease the financial burden on aspiring teachers. Colleges of Education train teachers for early childhood, primary, and junior secondary schools. Many have struggled with low intake despite the demand for qualified educators nationwide. This reform seeks to rejuvenate teacher education and improve access for low-income candidates. Supporters say it will increase enrolment, expand teacher supply, and improve access in underserved areas. Critics warn it could weaken admission standards, overcrowd institutions, and challenge quality assurance. The National Commission for Colleges of Education and the Federal Ministry of Education will oversee implementation and monitor long-term impacts on teacher training.
