NDPC Logs Over 1,500 Cyberattack Attempts, Calls for Round-the-Clock Security

NDPC Logs Over 1,500 Cyberattack Attempts, Calls for Round-the-Clock Security

The National Data Protection Commission recorded over 1,500 cyberattack attempts in a short period, forcing a temporary network shutdown to halt intrusions and reveal critical gaps in Nigeria’s data protection framework. According to Dr Vincent Olatunji, these attacks are now constant and increasingly sophisticated. He urged organisations to monitor systems round the clock and stay up to date with security protocols. He highlighted a shortage of qualified Data Protection Officers under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, creating a major skills gap. A recent training initiative aims to equip professionals for certification and effective data safeguarding. Under a public-private partnership model, Nigeria’s data protection sector has generated over $10 million in value and ₦7 billion in fees and fines. Experts caution against paying ransoms and call for stronger collaboration and continuous learning to protect sensitive information.

True, 24/7 monitoring helps, but chasing alerts without fixing weak passwords na only half battle.

It's surprising that over 1,500 attempts went undetected until a shutdown was needed.

Maybe the shutdown hurt more than it helped; constant downtime won't be sustainable for most agencies.

Implementing continuous network monitoring and staff training can close those gaps and prevent future intrusions.
