Africa CDC Warns DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Could Become Worst Ever
The head of Africa’s CDC has warned that the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo risks becoming the worst on record. Director-General Jean Kaseya told African heads of state that over 26,000 people who may have been exposed still haven’t been traced. He cautioned that without urgent action, this could surpass the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic that killed more than 11,000. A Red Cross official said the epidemic has not yet peaked and may last up to a year. Response efforts are hampered by a shortage of treatment centres and community resistance to hygiene measures.
