Latest data from the IMF and S&P Global ranks African countries by external debt using two key measures. Debt owed to the IMF (May 2026): Egypt leads with $10.67 bn, followed by Côte d’Ivoire ($5.0 bn), Kenya ($4.0 bn), Ghana ($3.9 bn) and Angola ($3.5 bn). DR Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Cameroon and Zambia complete the top ten. Total foreign-currency repayments due in 2026: Egypt faces the largest bill at about $27 bn.
