Hantavirus on Cruise Ship: How This Rare Virus Spreads

A recent cruise from Argentina to Cape Verde has raised alarms after one confirmed hantavirus case and several under investigation by health authorities including the WHO. Hantavirus is a group of viruses carried by rodents. Humans can become infected through contact with rodent urine, droppings or saliva. Different strains cause two main illnesses: Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome in the Americas and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome in Europe and Asia. Both can be severe or fatal.
