NPA and Police Launch Taskforce to Eliminate Illegal Checkpoints on Apapa and Tin Can Corridors

NPA and Police Launch Taskforce to Eliminate Illegal Checkpoints on Apapa and Tin Can Corridors

The Nigerian Ports Authority and the Nigeria Police Force have begun a joint operation to remove unauthorised checkpoints along the Apapa and Tin Can Island port corridors. They aim to ease chronic congestion and stop extortion disrupting Nigeria’s busiest logistics routes. High-level stakeholders, including freight forwarders and transport unions, met in Lagos to address jurisdictional overlaps between the Maritime Police and Lagos State Police. The NPA’s Managing Director revealed illegal roadblocks at key hotspots such as Berger and Mile 2, while the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (Maritime) warned that any officers running checkpoints will face disciplinary action. A joint task force comprising representatives from the Lagos State Government, NPA, police, and transport groups has been set up. Its mandate is to eliminate extortion, ensure free cargo flow, and maintain continuous monitoring and enforcement along the port corridors.

What guarantees exist that this new taskforce won't fizzle out like previous ones?

It's interesting how past crackdowns disappeared once media attention waned, leaving checkpoints popping up again.

Relying solely on security forces won't solve the root causes of extortion and gridlock in those corridors.

Regular patrols and unannounced inspections combined with public reporting hotlines could sustain checkpoint removals more effectively.
