How Careful Words Can Build Peace: Insights from Prof. Ogungbe’s Lecture
Professor Ebenezer Oluseun Ogungbe challenged Nigerians to use language responsibly as a path to unity and progress. He warned that careless speech can fuel violence, depression and division. Citing a recent Amnesty International report, he linked hundreds of incidents in Nigeria to harmful expressions. He shared the story of a postgraduate student driven out of studies by verbal abuse and noted rising rates of self‐harm among youths facing insults. Ogungbe urged schools to teach critical literacy and called on leaders, media professionals and religious figures to communicate with accuracy and respect. He recommended emotional intelligence training and introducing peace linguistics in academic programmes. He concluded that disciplined discourse is vital for peaceful coexistence and sustainable development.
