South Africa Overtakes Nigeria in CAF Champions League Titles After Sundowns’ Win
Mamelodi Sundowns clinched their second CAF Champions League trophy with a 2–1 aggregate victory over AS FAR Rabat. This success gave South African clubs their third title, pushing them ahead of Nigeria. Nigerian teams have only won two Champions League crowns, both secured by Enyimba in 2003 and 2004. No Nigerian club has reached the final since, while South African sides have appeared in three finals and won twice. Egyptian clubs still lead the competition with 19 titles, driven by Al-Ahly’s record 12 wins. Morocco sits second with nine, followed by DR Congo and Tunisia on six each, and further representation from Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana and others.
