Why the ₦10 Billion Campaign Cap Is Unrealistic for Nigeria’s Presidential Race
The new electoral law limits presidential campaign spending to ₦10 billion. In practice, this ceiling is laughable. In some states, gubernatorial campaigns have cost over ₦20 billion. One candidate spent nearly that amount in two separate state elections and still lost. A serious presidential bid needs far more. You must fund activities in 774 local government areas. You pay traditional rulers, grassroots mobilizers, lobbyists, private jets, fuel for vehicles and party agents in all 36 states. Even without direct bribery, normal logistics easily exceed ₦10 billion. That cap falls short of real costs.
