Mutiu Adepoju Explains Why He Never Broke into Real Madrid’s First Team

Mutiu Adepoju Explains Why He Never Broke into Real Madrid’s First Team — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Mutiu Adepoju joined Real Madrid’s reserve side in 1989 after impressing at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He spent three seasons in Castilla but never made the senior squad. Adepoju revealed on the Play Zone Podcast that La Liga’s limit of four foreign players blocked his promotion. At the time, Madrid’s first team roster already included stars like Hugo Sánchez, Gheorghe Hagi, Robert Prosinečki and Ricardo Rocha. When Sánchez suffered an injury, the club planned to call Adepoju up as cover. Unfortunately, he then injured his shoulder and missed that opportunity. A coaching change at season’s end sealed his exit from the club. He later moved to Racing Santander, finally securing regular top-flight football in La Liga.

How might Adepoju's career have changed if foreign player limits didn't exist in La Liga back then?

You're right, thinking about a limitless La Liga roster really highlights what might have been for Adepoju.

It's curious that despite three solid seasons in Castilla, Adepoju never even got a bench spot for the senior squad.

I'm not convinced that limits were the sole obstacle; other talents broke through under the same rules.

Modern academies ought to arrange strategic loans for foreign prospects, ensuring they gain senior appearances rather than stagnate in the reserves.
