Court Permanently Forfeits London Property Linked to Ex-Minister Useni

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted a final order forfeiting a London property tied to former FCT Minister Jeremiah Useni. Justice Binta Nyako found the asset was likely bought with illicit funds. The Code of Conduct Bureau first secured an interim forfeiture. No one came forward to claim the property after public notice, so the bureau applied to make the order permanent. A UK tribunal revealed that a supposed donor named “Tali Shani” did not exist. Senior Advocate Mike Ozekhome had claimed the gift, but the court agreed the evidence linked the property directly to Useni. The bureau also compared Useni’s official earnings with the property’s value. The gap reinforced suspicions of unlawful acquisition. The asset is now fully forfeited to the Federal Government.

I'm not sure this single order will truly shift accountability—our system needs broader reforms, not just token court decisions.

It's striking that the court swiftly moved from interim to permanent forfeiture without public details on how the property was traced.

It feels premature to celebrate forfeiture as proof of corruption without seeing the full evidence laid out in court records.

Citizens should monitor the appeal process closely and demand transparency on asset tracking methods used by the Code of Conduct Bureau.
