During the 2026 Social Work Day in Ebonyi, Federal Government Permanent Secretary Mrs. Nko Esuabana reaffirmed that social work practice has come to stay. She highlighted the 1989 Social Development Policy, the 2022 legal framework and urged stakeholders to back a bill for a Nigerian Council for Social Work. Prof. Friday Onwe of the Ebonyi State University Social Work Department praised practitioners for upholding dignity, solidarity and social justice. He emphasized the vital role of ethical and compassionate social workers in addressing environmental crises and societal inequality. Prof. Nkechi Emma-Echiegu celebrated the department’s growth from a dilapidated office to full accreditation and the launch of a disability agency that supports physically challenged students during fieldwork practicum. Goodwill messages came from AMSWON, ASWEN, NASoW, the Ebonyi State Local Government Service Commission and NAPTIP. Prof. Uzoma Okoye and a UNICEF specialist underscored the need for unity and professional standards under the Social Work Establishment Act of 2022.
