COOU’s 16th Convocation to Graduate 3,355 Students in ‘Diplomatic Edition’

COOU’s 16th Convocation to Graduate 3,355 Students in ‘Diplomatic Edition’

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University will hold its 16th convocation ceremony from April 22. A total of 3,355 undergraduates and 810 postgraduate diploma candidates are set to graduate. The event opens with a Founder’s Day Lecture on “Sustainable and Climate Resilient Future” by the EU Ambassador to Nigeria. The convocation address on “Building Innovative Minds and Bridges for Shared Prosperity” follows, delivered by the Polish Ambassador. Describing this as a “diplomatic edition,” the Vice-Chancellor highlighted new partnerships across Europe and America. Applications surged to 8,000 in 2023/24, with Nursing the most competitive programme. On standards, the VC affirmed strict merit-based promotions and zero tolerance for misconduct. She also appealed for more hostels and specialised facilities, and outlined plans for new schools, an AI research policy, Mandarin studies, and improved digital learning.

Honestly, focusing on diplomacy seems overplayed. I'd argue the student achievements and end-of-year celebrations matter more.

Calling this ceremony a 'Diplomatic Edition' seems more like a marketing label than a meaningful addition to convocation.

I'm not convinced that blending a Founder's Day Lecture on climate resilience into a graduation ceremony will resonate with all graduates.

Graduates should use the convocation's focus on diplomacy and climate resilience to build alliances with industry partners and policymakers.
