Sokoto’s Dange-Shuni Stadium Project Stalls, Leaving Youth and Businesses Waiting

The Modern Stadium Complex and Indoor Sports Hall in Dange-Shuni, Sokoto State, was meant to give young people a place to train, compete and develop sporting careers. It was also expected to host events, support schools and community programmes, and create jobs for local residents. Years after it was conceived, the project has reportedly not delivered the benefits promised to the community. Young athletes still face limited access to quality recreational facilities, while businesses that could have benefited from visitors, tournaments and construction activity continue to wait. This is bigger than one stadium. When public projects are delayed or abandoned, communities lose opportunities for jobs, tourism, healthier lifestyles and talent development. Residents deserve transparency, proper supervision and accountability so public investments are completed and put to use. A functioning stadium can nurture future champions, support local businesses and bring communities together. Public projects should be measured by the value they deliver, not by announcements or foundation-laying ceremonies.

What would residents want prioritised if work resumes: the indoor hall, the main stadium, or school and community access?

Agreed. Community and school access should come first, while the larger facilities can follow in phases.

A stalled sports project affects more than athletes when young people, schools, events, and local businesses were all expecting opportunities.

Big facilities can help, but a stadium alone will not develop careers without consistent programmes, coaching, and access for local youth.

Clear timelines, public progress updates, and a plan for affordable community use would help rebuild confidence while the project moves forward.
