Elon Musk Faces Criminal Probe Over $1M Voter Giveaway in Wisconsin

Elon Musk Faces Criminal Probe Over $1M Voter Giveaway in Wisconsin

A Wisconsin election panel says Elon Musk may have broken the state’s bribery law by offering $1 million checks to voters who cast ballots in the 2025 Supreme Court race. In a 5–1 vote, the bipartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission referred two voter complaints to the Brown County district attorney for possible criminal prosecution. Prosecutors have 40 days to decide whether to file charges under state law. Musk announced the plan on social media, promising million-dollar checks to people who voted and attended his event. Critics argue the move was meant to influence the outcome of a high-stakes judicial election. Musk and allied groups spent over $20 million backing conservative candidate Brad Schimel. Schimel lost by 10 points, preserving a liberal majority, after total race spending topped $100 million.

If states want to deter giveaways, clear guidelines on campaign incentives should be established before election season kicks off.
