FGC Kano Alumni Reject Education Ministry’s Appeal, Vow May 9 Rally and Legal Battle

FGC Kano Alumni Reject Education Ministry’s Appeal, Vow May 9 Rally and Legal Battle

Alumni of Federal Government College Kano have refused to suspend their planned protest and lawsuit over a contested land concession deal. A May 7 meeting with the Education Minister ended in deadlock. FGCKOSA’s president insisted their awareness rally on May 9 will go ahead as planned. He confirmed that legal action will continue and offered to match the commercial bidder’s infrastructure proposal to protect school land. The Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) backed Kano alumni and demanded an immediate halt to the concession plan. They pointed to decades of alumni-funded projects as proof that school assets need not be sold. The Minister of Education acknowledged alumni contributions but defended the concession as part of a broader infrastructure renewal strategy. He appealed for calm and invited alumni to discuss future Public-Private Partnership opportunities.

What do you think really motivated FGCK alumni to reject the Education Ministry's appeal and insist on the May 9 rally?

Are you asking if a lack of trust in the ministry prompted alumni to stick with the May 9 rally?

It seems odd that after a face-to-face meeting, both sides walked away without compromise or new proposals. Hard to see progress here.

Maybe the alumni's legal action will just delay real solutions. Isn't dialogue and mediation a more mature path than lawsuits?

Stakeholders could organise an independent committee to re-examine the land deal details before May 9, ensuring all concerns are transparently addressed.
