Sen. Sumaila Sparks Senate Showdown Over Tinubu’s Loans and Unpaid Contractors

A closed-door Senate session turned heated when Senator Kawu Sumaila of Kano South challenged the leadership over federal loans and stalled projects. Sumaila accused the Senate of approving massive loans for President Tinubu without ensuring contractors were paid. He warned that abandoned work sites could damage APC lawmakers’ re-election chances in 2027. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Leader Opeyemi Bamidele struck back, alleging a N90 billion ecological contract in Kano was arranged for Sumaila before his defection. Sumaila refused to back down, denouncing attempts to silence him and saying he voiced the concerns of many senators.

A follow-up demand for transparent spending reports and regular progress updates would help ensure contractors receive due payment on stalled projects.
