NUJ Warns NBC Directive Threatens Media Freedom

NUJ Warns NBC Directive Threatens Media Freedom

The Nigeria Union of Journalists has condemned a recent National Broadcasting Commission advisory as an attempt to curb press freedom. The NBC warned broadcasters against presenting opinions as facts and threatened sanctions for Class B breaches, including fines or suspensions. In a statement signed by its national secretary, the NUJ expressed concern over vague regulatory provisions. It argued that such rules risk promoting self-censorship and reducing media outlets to mere mouthpieces. The union cited Section 39 of the Constitution to defend freedom of expression. It urged journalists to stay professional and fearless in analysing issues and holding power to account, warning that any attempt to silence the press undermines Nigeria’s democracy.

With NBC threatening sanctions for opinion-based broadcasts, how do you think journalists can balance commentary and factual reporting under these rules?

How exactly will NBC define opinion segments versus news facts without stifling journalistic nuance?

I get the concern, but journalists might still separate clear analysis segments from straight news, then label them properly.

It seems odd that the NBC frames opinion as a breach, but interpretation and context often shape how audiences perceive the news.

I'm not sure blanket sanctions are the answer; this directive could backfire by pushing broadcasters toward self-censorship instead of improving accuracy.

Media houses might establish clear internal guidelines distinguishing opinion segments from news reports to comply with NBC rules and preserve credibility.
