Court Remands Cross River Man Over Alleged Killing of Two in Odukpani
A Calabar Magistrate Court has remanded Akaninyene Ignatius Eshiet at the Afokang Custial Centre over the alleged killing of two men in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. The matter was adjourned to August 12, 2026, for transfer to the High Court, which has jurisdiction over murder cases. Residents and traditional leaders in the affected communities have raised concerns over the handling of other suspects. They questioned why Eshiet's brother, Nkereuwem, was returned to police custody without being arraigned, and why Uduak Essien, initially arrested as a co-suspect, was released. Police said Essien was released after investigations and the principal suspect's statement found no evidence linking her to the alleged killings. Community leaders have called for a transparent investigation and the prosecution of anyone found culpable through due process.
