Ghana Court Jails Nigerian Woman for Five Years Over Human Trafficking

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 43-year-old Nigerian woman to five years in prison for human trafficking. She will be deported after serving her term. She pleaded guilty to recruiting, transporting, and harbouring two Nigerian girls, aged 19 and 17, for prostitution. Prosecutors say she brought them into Ghana through unapproved routes, supplied them with condoms, and demanded a daily remittance of GH¢200 from their earnings. Investigators report she threatened to send a fetish priest after the victims if they tried to escape. She was arrested by the Ghana Immigration Service at Asankragua following intelligence on her activities. The court rejected her claim that she did not know it was illegal to bring others into Ghana. After completing her custodial sentence, she must leave the country.

A five-year sentence barely matches the lifelong trauma imposed on those girls; it hardly seems a strong deterrent.
