FBI Arrests Nigerian ‘Putsammy’ in U.S. Romance Scam Case, Faces 40 Years
The FBI has arrested Samuel Ugberaese—known online as “Putsammy” or “Putput”—after his extradition from Nigeria. He’s charged in a cross-border romance fraud scheme that targeted U.S. and international victims. According to a U.S. Department of Justice press release, a federal grand jury indicted Ugberaese in January 2021. He faces one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. Prosecutors allege he and co-defendant Oluwadamilare Kolaogunbule used false stories and shell accounts to funnel and hide criminal proceeds. U.S. authorities—including the DOJ’s Office of International Affairs, FBI Attaché Office in Abuja, INTERPOL, the Nigeria Police Force, and other partners—coordinated his arrest and transfer. If convicted, Ugberaese could receive up to 40 years in prison.
