Real Risks of Traveling Overland From Nigeria to Libya: A Firsthand Guide

Many people ask about the land route from Nigeria to Libya and the realities behind the journey. In this guide, I share my own experience and stories from others who have made the trip. The typical route heads from Kano or Katsina into Niger Republic, through border towns, then reaches Agadez. From there, travelers cross the Sahara Desert, often in crowded pickup trucks. Heat, water shortages, hunger, vehicle breakdowns, robbery, and even abandonment are common. Some do not survive the crossing. Before you consider this journey, prepare an international passport, emergency funds, reliable contacts, sufficient food and water, a phone with power bank, and verified information on the route. Beware of fake agents promising quick passage or guaranteed jobs. If possible, explore legal alternatives like work permits, study visas, or skilled-worker programs. These options offer safer and more reliable paths to Europe or Libya.

Travel guides often dramatize risk; isn't it a matter of proper planning and local contacts rather than sheer danger?

Pack extra fuel canisters, carry sufficient water supplies, and map out reliable checkpoints before departing each border town.
