5 Common Seeds You Can Add to Your Diet Instead of Throwing Away

Many fruit and vegetable seeds are often discarded, but some can add nutrients to meals when prepared properly. Watermelon seeds and pumpkin seeds contain protein, healthy fats, magnesium and zinc. They can be dried, lightly roasted, chewed well or ground into powder for soups and snacks. Tomato seeds provide fibre and lycopene, while citrus seeds contain plant compounds with antioxidant properties. Rather than sieving tomato seeds out of stew, they can be left in. Citrus seeds can be dried and used sparingly because of their bitter taste. Pawpaw seeds are sometimes used in traditional remedies, but health claims around deworming and treating liver or kidney conditions are not well established. They may cause side effects and should be avoided during pregnancy. Speak with a qualified health professional before using seeds as treatment for any illness. Food seeds can be a useful addition to a balanced diet, but they are not a substitute for prescribed medicine or proper medical care.

The nutrient angle is useful, but "prepared properly" matters; not every seed should automatically be treated as a snack.

Starting with dried, lightly roasted watermelon or pumpkin seeds seems simple, then grinding a small portion into soups for variety.
