Army Dismantles Illegal Lagos Bunkering Site, Arrests Six and Seizes Fuel

Army Dismantles Illegal Lagos Bunkering Site, Arrests Six and Seizes Fuel

On 16 July 2026, troops of the 65 Battalion raided a suspected illegal bunkering operation in Orile, Lagos State. The intelligence-led action led to the arrest of six individuals linked to the illicit petroleum trade. During the targeted operation, soldiers seized four drums of suspected illegally refined fuel, a white Ford bus, and a tanker used to transport the contraband. The swift response followed credible reports about the group’s activities in the area. All suspects and recovered items were handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Lagos State Command, for further investigation and possible prosecution. Major General Adebayo Babalola, General Officer Commanding 81 Division, praised the troops for their professionalism. He urged continued public support through timely and credible information to help curb economic crimes.

Are there any plans announced for routine patrols or pipeline inspections to spot illicit bunkering early?

It's surprising only four drums were seized; could larger fuel caches have been overlooked during the raid?

Arresting six suspects is good, but focusing on low-level operatives might miss the bigger players behind the scheme.

Communities can aid enforcement by reporting unusual tank movements and keeping watch on undeclared storage sites nearby.
