IGP Petitioned as NUC Defies Court of Appeal Ruling

IGP Petitioned as NUC Defies Court of Appeal Ruling

A long-running dispute between the National Universities Commission and creditor Kunle Rotimi has escalated into a criminal complaint. After a June 28, 2024 Court of Appeal order, the NUC was instructed to reinstate Rotimi and pay all back entitlements from 1996. Twenty-one months later, the commission has still not complied. In a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Rotimi accuses top NUC officials of contempt, conspiracy to obstruct justice, perjury and forgery. He has also taken his grievances to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, the Nigerian Bar Association, relevant federal ministries and UNESCO. As of March 2026, the NUC has not issued a response. Rotimi warns that continued delays waste public funds and erode trust in the justice system.

What do you make of the NUC petitioning the IGP rather than reinstating Rotimi after the Court of Appeal ruling?

What legal reasoning could NUC offer for petitioning the IGP instead of complying with the reinstatement order?

Absolutely, it feels like they're dodging the obvious move. Petition over reinstatement? Quite the plot twist around here.

It's surprising to see a regulatory body publicly challenging a Court of Appeal decision and dragging the dispute into criminal territory.

NUC should expedite full compliance with the court ruling, settle those entitlements, and avoid dragging the matter through criminal proceedings.
