Super Eagles Legend Yakubu Gets Hero’s Welcome at Everton vs Chelsea Clash

Super Eagles Legend Yakubu Gets Hero’s Welcome at Everton vs Chelsea Clash — 1 of 5
1 / 5

Super Eagles icon Yakubu Aiyegbeni returned to Merseyside on March 21 and was greeted by a rapturous crowd at the new 52,888-seat Hill Dickinson Stadium. Everton supporters serenaded their former striker with chants of “Feed the Yak and he will score” as he arrived to watch the Toffees face Chelsea. Yakubu’s appearance added extra nostalgia to the Premier League showdown. He met Chelsea 14 times during his career, netting four goals and setting up two more against them. Although he retired in 2017, his punditry and ambassador roles have done little to dim his legend on the blue half of Merseyside. Across eight seasons at Everton, Yakubu scored 33 goals in all competitions and became the club’s record signing. His Premier League record stands at 95 goals in 252 appearances for Everton, Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers and others. Fans hope his return can inspire David Moyes’s side against a Chelsea side still smarting from a recent Champions League setback.

Absolutely, that chant really shows how much fans trust his deadly finishing whenever he's given chances.

While the chants and 52,888 fans were impressive, it feels more like nostalgia than evidence of any ongoing impact at Everton

I get the excitement over Yakubu's return, but calling it a true hero's welcome after nearly two decades away seems a bit over the top

Everton could build on this energy by hosting regular alumni matches or fan panels to keep former players engaged with the current squad
