Lagos Strengthens Disease Surveillance with Hands-On Training

Lagos Strengthens Disease Surveillance with Hands-On Training

Lagos State has launched a four-day training for Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers to boost outbreak response. The Quarterly Surveillance Evaluation and Capacity Building programme brings together surveillance officers, lab experts and public health stakeholders to practice case-based evaluation. Held in Lekki under the theme “From Data to Action,” the workshop emphasizes early warning systems, rapid intervention and the shift to electronic reporting. Officials stressed that accurate data flow and timely communication are vital to preventing panic and curbing outbreaks. Participants praised the practical scenarios that sharpen decision-making at community and state levels. The programme, running April 22–25, reinforces Lagos’ leadership in public health preparedness nationwide.

It's interesting they brought in lab experts, but I wonder if quarterly evaluations alone can really strengthen outbreak response.

I'm not convinced a single programme will solve systemic gaps in notification and reporting across multiple local governments.

Pairing these surveillance officers with local health volunteers could help sustain response improvements after the training ends.
