French Court Dismisses Cardiff City’s €122m Claim Over Emiliano Sala’s Death

French Court Dismisses Cardiff City’s €122m Claim Over Emiliano Sala’s Death

A French commercial court in Nantes has thrown out Cardiff City’s 122 million euro compensation suit against FC Nantes. The Welsh club had sought damages for lost income and other financial impacts after Emiliano Sala died in a plane crash on January 21, 2019. The court also ordered Cardiff to pay 300,000 euros in moral damages to Nantes. Sala, 28, and pilot David Ibbotson both perished when their light aircraft went down in the English Channel, just two days after Sala’s move was finalised. Cardiff’s lawyer, Céline Jones, said the aim was to uncover the full truth and honour Sala’s memory. She added that transparency, integrity and safety in professional football had not prevailed. Nantes’ lawyer, Jérôme Marsaudon, welcomed the verdict and insisted the club bore no responsibility for the crash. Earlier rulings by the Court of Arbitration for Sport and FIFA had confirmed the transfer’s completion. FIFA also ordered Cardiff to pay the remaining 11 million euros of the original 17 million euro fee.

I agree, this ruling clearly raises the bar for clubs seeking compensation, making future claims after tragic incidents more challenging.

Do you think this verdict will change how clubs pursue compensation after tragic events?

It seems unusual that a court would dismiss such a significant claim given the scale of financial loss alleged.

Dismissing the claim entirely overlooks contractual expectations on both parties, making me question if justice was truly served.

Clubs should review their insurance and contractual clauses for player travel to prevent similar disputes after accidents.
