How ‘Perfect’ Naija Weddings Are Bankrupting Couples
I recently attended a lavish wedding that looked flawless on Instagram. Weeks later, I discovered the couple financed it with loans and family borrowings—and vendors still chase them for payment. Today’s Nigerian weddings often include an engagement or traditional ceremony, a church/white wedding, and sometimes a thanksgiving service. Three events demand multiple outfits, aso-ebi orders and extra expenses that drive many couples into debt. Vendors now set prices based on a couple’s desperation, while guests buy overpriced aso-ebi and matching accessories just to attend. All that spending leaves newlyweds without savings for their first home or emergency needs. Marriage should outlast the celebrations. How are you planning a wedding you can afford? For those already married, do you regret overspending on your big day?
